Excavation

Dig about 7 in deep (4 in base + 1 in sand + 2⅜ in paver, finishing slightly above grade). That's about 2.6 yd³ of soil to haul away or re-use, roughly 1.3× that once it's loosened.

Order of work

  1. Call 811, mark the outline and set string lines with the slope.
  2. Excavate, compact the subgrade and lay fabric.
  3. Place base in 2 in lifts, compacting each one.
  4. Screed 1 in of sand, then lay pavers from a corner without walking on the sand.
  5. Cut the edges, install the edge restraint, and compact the pavers.
  6. Sweep in polymeric sand, compact again, blow off the surface and mist as directed.
